Classic Italian Margherita Pizza

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

For the topping:

  • 1 ½ cups crushed tomatoes (canned)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Make the dough: In a small bowl, mix the yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring to form a dough. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth. Let it rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes, then set aside.
  3. Assemble the pizza: Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). Roll out the dough on a floured surface to your desired thickness. Transfer to a pizza stone or baking sheet.
  4. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough. Add slices of fresh mozzarella and a sprinkle of salt and pepper.
  5. Bake for 12–15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  6. Top with fresh basil leaves before serving.
